Bodie June 2008 : Bodie was a gold rush town in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is very well preserved for a ghost town. This gallery attempts to show that Bodie still has the ability to make today's tourists connect with the times when it was booming.

Vienna July 2008 : Vienna is known for its music and cafes. It is also a city with splendid architecture, thanks to Franz Josef's nearly non-stop improvement of the city's buildings. Vienna is also a city that is remarkably progressive in its support of avant-garde architecture. Vienna's art history museum is a world class institution. Mostly due to the interest of its nearly 600 years of uninterrupted Hapsburg rule in which time the rulers amassed art from all parts of Europe, the near East and Egypt.

Mauthausen Concentration Camp : Mauthausen is a concentration camp about 200KM west of Vienna. It has been very carefully preserved, maintained and documented. The horrors of WWII are there to see and hopefully learn from to not repeat ever again. Even as I write this, I think such atrocities are happening elsewhere. The people who died at the camp came from diverse origins: Jews of Austria, Jews who survived the frightening death marches from the eastern camps as the Red Army was advancing west, Spanish Republicans, politically active people, homosexuals etc. Much of the inmates staying places are gone, but the towers, the barbed wire fences, the gas chamber, the ovens to incinerate are still there to see and hopefully teach to never allow such an act to be perpetrated again. All the photos were shot with a Canon 20D, many at ISO 1600.

Hampi : Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire. It was built from the mid 1400s to late 1500s. The Vijayanagara kings were very successful in fighting and conquering their neighbors. Each successful battle was followed by a renewed round of construction. The kingdom eventually fell to the combined forces of its neighbors. This was followed by six months of wanton destruction and looting. To see the ruins expect to cover over 30 km of distance, lots of climbing and scrambling and spending a lot of time thinking what a magnificent place it might have been - considering how beautiful it is today. These pictures were shot at various times of the day on Fuji 160S Pro film and scanned.

Ajanta Ellora : These are the pictures of three sites near Aurangabad - Daulatabad Fort, the cave temples of Ajanta and Ellora. The story of the fort in Daulatabad is full of wars, deceit and sheer stupidity. Muhammad Bin Tughlaq wanted to move his capital from Delhi to a more centrally located place and founded Daulatabad. The place was arid, his soldiers revolted and he went back. The Vijaynagar empire managed to build an outpost here with a huge temple. The Delhi kings did not like this and attacked the fort. Repeated attacks motivated the sitting kings to develop an elaborate system to defend the fort.

Ajanta has cave temples ranging from the second century BC to the seventh century AD. The Buddhist monks carved these temples in a canyon whose sheer basaltic walls gave them a lot of solid rock to work with. The scale of the operation is to be seen to be believed. Ajanta is famous for its paintings and some of the old paintings have been restored and give an idea of what a glorious place it might have been in its peak.

Ellora is a newer cave temple complex, built much in the same spirit as Ajanta. The temples are devoted to Buddhist, Jain and Hindu gods. There are some enormous temples and dormitories in Ellora - all carved out of hill-sides.

Dark caves and a ban on flash and tripods makes it very challenging to make photographic images in these temples. The pictures were shot on Kodak 400UC film and scanned.

Black and White : Some of the finest pictures have been shot and shown to the world in black and white. Some of the finest photographers have used the black and white film medium to excellent effect. While it is possible to recreate the film effect in Photoshop, the pleasure and at times the pain of shooting film is almost as rewarding as studying the works of the B&W masters like Ansel Adams, Cartier-Bresson and Sebastiao Salgado. Without the use of a darkroom, here is my attempt at B&W. All of these images have been shot with Ilford XP2 Super and scanned with Nikon Coolscan V.

American Southwest : A photo journey of the great American Southwest - Arizona, Utah, Colorado. The trip that took us to the Grand Canyon, Petrified National Forest, Canyon de Chelly, Monument Valley, Mesa Verde, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon. All this in winter. A truly fascinating place and no wonder Edward Abbey wanted to keep untouched (except for beer can mile markers).
